Leo Strauss and Our Current Political Condition

Earl Shorris wrote Ignoble liars: Leo Strauss, George Bush, and the philosophy of mass deception, published in Harper's Magazine, June 2004.  This is a very concise history of Strauss and a synopsis of his philosophical foundation.

It is instructive to listen to Strauss: "It would be absurd to hamper the free flow of wisdom by any regulations; hence the rule of the wise must be absolute rule. it would be equally absurd to hamper the free flow of wisdom by consideration of the unwise wishes of the unwise; hence the wise rulers ought not to be responsible to the unwise subjects." Strauss explains that this would result in the subjection of what is by nature higher to that which is lower.

His reading of Plato comes down to this: true democracy is an act against nature and must be prevented at all costs.     Strauss, buffeted by history in his own life, railed against historicism, which holds that meaning can only arise from within a particular historical context.

For the uninitiated, "contradiction" is the key to the Straussian approach, and more than anything else it defines the Bush regime and its circle of influentials.    Leo Strauss advised his readers not to write in plain English.   He ascribed his advocacy of bad writing, which he called "esoteric writing," to the possibility that "a writer could be persecuted for what he said.    Thus, the evershifting rationale for the invasion of Iraq, legislation named Clear Skies that will result in more pollution, No Child Left Behind that aims to destroy public education.  The list is endless.

If you know that they are intentionally speaking this way, then you can cease to try and make sense of their words and focus on their actions.  Their words only provide context for the actions, no meaning beyond that.

- Bush on Miers

“Over the past three decades, Harriet Miers has built a stellar record of accomplishment in the law. She's been a model of service to our country and to our citizens.   I know her character; she's a woman of principle and deep conviction.   I've known Harriet for over a decade. I've worked with Harriet. She's a woman of principle and character. She's highly intelligent. She has been a pioneer in the field of law in my state of Texas.   Secondly, she knows the kind of judge I'm looking for -- after all, she was a part of the process that selected John Roberts.

Finally, I got some interesting suggestions. I actually listen to the senators when they bring forth ideas. And they brought forth some really interesting ideas during the course of our conversations, some told me directly, many brought to me by people on my staff. And one of the most interesting ideas I heard was, why don't you pick somebody who hasn't been a judge? Why don't you reach outside the -- I think one senator said, the "judicial monastery."

I'm interested in finding somebody who shares my philosophy today, and will have that same philosophy 20 years from now.”

 “UNITED  STATES”

- Bush on Katrina

Congress needs to pay for as much of the hurricane relief as possible by cutting spending.  I will ask them to make even deeper reductions in the mandatory spending programs than are already planned. As Congress completes action on the 2006 appropriations bills, I call on members to make real cuts in non-security spending.         The private sector will be the engine that drives the recovery of the Gulf Coast. So I've outlined a set of policies to attract private investment to the affected areas   I look forward to working with Congress to pass reasonable law that will allow current refiners to expand and to encourage the construction of new refineries.

New data suggest Katrina was a less intense, Category 3 storm

with peak-sustained winds of 115 mph       Katrina might have further downgraded to a strong Category 1 system with 95-mph winds, when it punched water through New Orleans' levees, severely flooding most of the city and killing hundreds. The levees were designed to withstand a Category 3 storm.

Levees were 'heaved' upward from below

That is different from initial theories offered by the Army Corps of Engineers that the floodwalls were topped by storm surge and raises more questions about design and construction.

Preventing people from returning to New Orleans threatens to alter the demographics of the city, which was predominately African-American before Katrina struck August 29, Jackson said.

Bush says business sector must cover cost of post-Katrina recovery

US President George W. Bush on Tuesday said private business will have to pick up much of the tab for rebuilding New Orleans and other Gulf Coast areas destroyed by Hurricane Katrina, saying there are limits to what the federal government can afford to pay.

"I've outlined a set of policies to attract private investment to the affected areas   "I call on Congress to includes these measures in the recovery legislation that they send to my desk," the president said.    Bush also urged Congress to find areas to trim in the federal budget, to prevent an already massive budget deficit from ballooning further.

Iraq's Shiite and Kurdish leaders quietly adopted new rules over the weekend that will make it virtually impossible for the constitution to fail in the upcoming national referendum, prompting Sunni Arabs and a range of independent political figures to complain that the vote was being fixed... Q Mr. President, you presided over the largest increase in the size, the power and the cost of the federal government since Lyndon Baines Johnson. A lot of your supporters are wondering what's so conservative about that? And can you answer them, and tell the American people, given the budget deficit, the cost of the war, the cost of Katrina, specifically -- by naming a specific program or revenue measure -- how you're going to pay for all this?

THE PRESIDENT: First, let me remind people that we are at war. …  Secondly, when it comes to discretionary spending, non-security discretionary spending, the budget I submitted to the United States Congress actually reduces non-discretionary -- discretionary -- non-security spending. … We proposed to eliminate or streamline 150 programs in the budget process, saving about $20 billion this year.

A  DISTURBING  HISTORY …  PASS  THIS  ALONG

Against school: How public education cripples our kids

AUTHOR:  John Taylor Gatto is a former New York State and New York City Teacher of the Year.   He was a participant in the Harper's Magazine forum "School on a Hill,"which appeared in the September 2001 issue.

Could it be that our schools are designed to make sure not one of them ever really grows up?

Mass schooling of a compulsory nature really got its teeth into the United States between 1905 and 1915, though it was conceived of much earlier and pushed for throughout most of the nineteenth century.   The reason given for this transformation of family and cultural traditions was threefold:  To make 1) good people. 2) good citizens. 3) everyone their personal best.    These goals are dead wrong.

Mencken the satirist traces the template for our own educational system back to the military state of Prussia, and that really is cause for concern.   He wrote in The American Mercury for April 1924 that the aim of public education is not:

to fill the young of the species with knowledge and awaken their intelligence. ... Nothing could be further from the truth. The aim ... is simply to reduce as many individuals as possible to the same safe level, to breed and train a standardized citizenry, to put down dissent and originality. That is its aim in the United States... and that is its aim everywhere else.

But what shocks is that we should so eagerly have adopted one of the very worst aspects of Prussian culture: an educational system deliberately designed to produce mediocre intellects, to hamstring the inner life, to deny students appreciable leadership skills, and to ensure docile and incomplete citizens in order to render the populace "manageable."

It was from James Bryant Conant that I first got wind of the real purposes of American schooling (president of Harvard for twenty years, WWI poison-gas specialist, WWII executive on the atomic-bomb project, high commissioner of the American zone in Germany after WWII, and truly one of the most influential figures of the twentieth century).       Conant wrote that the modem schools we attend were the result of a "revolution" engineered between 1905 and 1930. He cites Alexander Inglis's 1918 book, Principles of Secondary Education, in which "one saw this revolution through the eyes of a revolutionary."     Conant himself, campaigned tirelessly for an American school system designed along the same lines.

Inglis, makes it perfectly clear that modern, industrialized, compulsory schooling was to make a sort of surgical incision into the prospective unity of these underclasses.   Divide children and it was unlikely that the ignorant mass of mankind, would ever re-integrate into a dangerous whole.

Inglis breaks down the actual purpose - of modem schooling into six basic functions:

1) to establish fixed habits of reaction to authority, and preclude critical judgment.

2) "the conformity function," - its intention is to make children as alike as possible – predictable

3) to determine each student's proper social role - by logging in "your permanent record."

4) once social role is diagnosed, children are sorted and trained accordingly - not one step further.

5) enhance the breeding stock - tag the unfit and bar them from society

6) a small fraction of the kids will be taught how to manage and control a population dumbed down

In time a great number of industrial titans came to recognize the enormous profits to be had by cultivating and tending just such a herd via public education, among them Andrew Carnegie and John D. Rockefeller.      Woodrow Wilson, then president of Princeton University, said the following to the New York City School Teachers Association in 1909:

"We want one class of persons to have a liberal education, and we want another class of persons, a very much larger class, of necessity, in every society, to forgo the privileges of a liberal education and fit themselves to perform specific difficult manual tasks."

Mass production required mass consumption, and at the turn of the twentieth century most Americans considered it both unnatural and unwise to buy things they didn't actually need.    Mandatory schooling was a godsend on that count - it encouraged students not to think at all - leaving them sitting ducks for another great invention of the modem era - marketing.

Two groups of people can always be convinced to consume more: addicts and children.   School has done a pretty good job of turning our children into addicts, but it has done a spectacular job of turning our children into children.     Theorists from Plato to Dr. Inglis knew that if children could be cloistered with other children, stripped of responsibility and independence, encouraged to develop only the trivializing emotions of greed, envy, jealousy, and fear, they would grow older but never truly grow up.

Maturity has by now been banished from nearly every aspect of our lives. Easy divorce laws have removed the need to work at relationships; easy credit has removed the need for fiscal self-control; easy entertainment has removed the need to learn to entertain oneself; easy answers have removed the need to ask questions.

We have become a nation of children, happy to surrender our judgments and our wills to political exhortations and commercial blandishments that would insult actual adults.   We buy televisions, and then we buy the things we see on the television.   And, worst of all, we don't bat an eye when Ari Fleischer tells us to "be careful what you say" even if we remember having been told somewhere back in school that America is the land of the free. We simply buy that one too. Our schooling, as intended, has seen to it.

Now for the good news. Once you understand the logic behind modern schooling, its tricks and traps are fairly easy to avoid. School trains children to be employees and consumers; teach your own to be leaders and adventurers. School trains children to obey reflexively; teach your own to think critically and independently. Well-schooled kids have a low threshold for boredom; help your own to develop an inner life so that they'll never be bored. Urge them to take on the serious material, the grown-up material, in history, literature, philosophy, music, art, economics, theology - all the stuff schoolteachers know well enough to avoid. Challenge your kids with plenty of solitude so that they can learn to enjoy their own company, to conduct inner dialogues. Well-schooled people are conditioned to dread being alone, and they seek constant companionship through the TV, the computer, the cell phone, and through shallow friendships quickly acquired and quickly abandoned. Your children should have a more meaningful life, and they can.

First, though, we must wake up to what our schools really are: laboratories of experimentation on young minds, drill centers for the habits and attitudes that corporate society demands. Mandatory education serves children only incidentally; its real purpose is to turn them into servants. Don't let your own have their childhoods extended, not even for a day. If David Farragut could take command of a captured British warship as a pre-teen, if Thomas Edison could publish a broadsheet at the age of twelve, if Ben Franklin could apprentice himself to a printer at the same age (then put himself through a course of study that would choke a Yale senior today), there's no telling what your own kids could do. After a long life, and thirty years in the public school trenches, I've concluded that genius is as common as dirt. We suppress our genius only because we haven't yet figured out how to manage a population of educated men and women. The solution, I think, is simple and glorious. Let them manage themselves.

COMMENT  BY  FRIEND:    re:  Bush proposes using military in bird flu pandemic

That could explain all the crap being propagated about the non existent pandemic.  But then again they may intend to manufacture one.  Did you know that in Australia this year alone more than 3,600 people have died from ordinary flu, and that is about the average number each year.  So why is such a big deal being made about bird flu when only 64 have died worldwide so far? Something smells very bad indeed.

On average, 500-1500 deaths per year are reported in Canada due to influenza or pneumonia as a complication of influenza.

US to create a bird flu virus mutation   March/05

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has begun a series of experiments to see how likely the bird flu virus could result in a human pandemic. The six-month series of experiments seeks to simulate the mixing and matching of genes from the H5N1 avian flu virus that has plagued Asia and a common human flu virus that public-health experts fear could turn avian flu into a pandemic, the Wall Street Journal reported Thursday. CDC scientists inside an ultra-secure laboratory [?!?] have started swapping the genes of the H5N1 avian virus with the genes of an H3N2 virus, the strain behind most recent human flu outbreaks.

Green fireball across sky likely a meteor, experts say

KDKA Radio reported the object was seen from Indiana to Virginia,       A bright green object that blazed from north to south over the region in the predawn hours yesterday likely was a meteor and not the re-entry of space debris, an Air Force Space Command official said.     An object's greenish appearance normally is the signature of a rocket re-entry, which apparently was not the case.     "It could have been meteor activity, but I can't say for sure."

Asteroid Impact May Wipe out Life on Earth in 2035 — Russian Scientists

According to the model, the impact of a 500-meter asteroid traveling at a speed of 10-20 kilometers per second hitting the ocean would cause a circular wave 200-meters high. An asteroid 10 kilometers in diameter would cause a tsunami 4 kilometers high which would be about 400 meters high as it hit land. The scientists say that a similar disaster took place millions of years ago and resulted in the extinction of 90 percent of all living species."
