Court Rules for Paper Over Death-to-Muslims Letter

The Arizona Supreme Court ruled Friday that a newspaper cannot be sued for printing a letter that suggested Americans respond to attacks on U.S. troops in Iraq by going to the nearest mosque and killing the first five Muslims they see. The high court unanimously held that the letter to the editor was political speech protected by the First Amendment.

America Held Hostage        PAUL KRUGMAN

Bush's speech on Tuesday contained a chilling message: America has been taken hostage by his martial dreams ... a withdrawal from Iraq would be a victory for Al Qaeda, and you wage war with the president you have, not the president you want.  But it's time to face up to three realities.

First, the war is helping, not hurting, the terrorists - A CIA report warns that Iraq has become a magnet and training ground for Islamic extremists, who will eventually threaten other countries.

Second, the clear victory the hawks promised is no longer possible - pretty much the whole U.S. Army is either in, returning from, or preparing to go to Iraq, with “the coalition of the willing” shrinking.

Third, a time limit on our commitment will do more good than harm.   The Iraq that emerges once U.S. forces are gone won't bear much resemblance to neocons ideal, but it will pose less of a terrorist threat.   A withdrawal timetable would expedite a political solution to the insurgency.

Remember, Iraq wasn't a breeding ground for terrorists before we went there.  The point is that the presence of American forces in Iraq is making our country less safe. So it's time to start winding down the war.

Life in post-Bush America: Control freaks, rebels and drones

First - the control freaks righteously telling us what to do. Their lives are devoted to making sure that everyone else is thinking the same way that they do -- or at least sullen obedience.   Then we have the rebels -- the "Rage against the Machine" types are the loners .. the cowboys, the bloggers, the ones who speak out against lies and injustice.

And lastly we have the drones -- the ones who believe that Bush-controlled elections are honest, that the economy isn't tanking and that they lost their jobs to outsourcing through some fault of their own. They have never heard of Jeff Gannon or the Downing Street memos -- or, if they have, they carefully keep their mouths shut. Many of them work for the White House and the Pentagon.  Famous drones in history: There are none.

If you're not sure which state are you in, it will all sort itself out.   The Bush Republican bubble is bound to collapse -- as always happens when there is reckless over-spending, gross corruption, intentional mismanagement and unjustifiable endless war -- causing the safe and protected world that we now know to vanish.

The Stain of Torture

I speak out against systematic, government-sanctioned torture and excessive abuse of prisoners during our war on terrorism.   This extraordinary shift in policy and values is alien to my concept of modern-day America and of my government and profession.        Reports of torture and ill-treatment defy the claim that this abusive behavior is limited to a few noncommissioned officers because the military has bowed to errant civilian leadership.    Torture by U.S. forces have been accompanied by military medical personnel and by new military guidelines that authorize complicity by health professionals.

Island paradise or torture chamber?          TORONTO  STAR

When U.S. deputy assistant secretary of state DiRita  was asked if detainees were being held there, he didn't deny it outright, saying only, "I don't know."     They're being subjected to treatment that makes the abuses at the military-run Abu Ghraib prison near Baghdad and Guantanamo Bay camp in Cuba look small-time, say intelligence analysts.   Last year, Federal Bureau of Investigation director Robert Mueller said CIA interrogation techniques "violate all American anti-torture laws,” and instructed FBI agents to step outside of the room when the CIA steps in.    Because the agency operates outside the law, doing what the government doesn't want to be publicly associated with, "it isn't bound by international treaties," says Pike, director of GlobalSecurity.org.

In a blistering report released in March, Behind the Wire,  Human Rights First outlined the suspected scope of the global network of covert detention facilities. "The U.S. government is holding prisoners in a secret system of offshore prisons beyond the reach of adequate supervision, accountability or law," it stated, referring to the abuses at Abu Ghraib prison as "just the tip of the iceberg."

Israeli Human Rights Abuses and the U.S. Attack on the United Nations and the NGO Community

Successive White House administrations, along with the leaders of both major political parties and the vast majority of their members in Congress, have justified U.S. support for the Israeli occupation and colonization of the West Bank and Gaza Strip by defining the core issue of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict as Israeli security rather than Palestinian rights under international law or the inherent relationship between human rights and security.      Actually, Washington’s sanction of Israeli human rights abuses is quite consistent with a policy that condones abuses by other client states in the Middle East, Africa, Latin America, South and Southeast Asia, and elsewhere.

Spielberg project leaves Mossad cold

Steven Spielberg’s latest project, VENGEANCE, is a dramatisation of tit-for-tat killings that followed the 1972 killings of Israeli Olympic athletes by Palestinian fighters.      Israel has never formally claimed responsibility for the shootings, explosive booby-traps and cross-border commando raids that killed 10 Palestinians.    The campaign included the 1973 slaying in Norway of a Moroccan waiter mistaken for Black September's leader.  Six members of the Israeli hit team were prosecuted for murder.   Israel eventually paid compensation to the victim's family.  The screenplay shows less-than-flattering portrayal of Israeli tactics.

Why Film Director Steven Spielberg Should Avoid Malta this week

DEBKAfile’s counter-terror experts comment that, while these aspects of the film are compelling, the filmmakers’ security also requires proper attention to the defining elements of terrorism, prior intelligence. Our sources say this is not a good week to start shooting in Malta. The director and his crew would be well advised to give the Mediterranean island a wide berth for the moment because of certain events that might even place them in harm’s way.     Jihad Islami may typically decide to mark its commemoration date by hitting American or Israeli targets somewhere in the Middle East.

The Seeds of Fascism

As the Jewish writer Albert Memmi experienced and described so well during the French colonization of Tunisia, "Every colonial nation carries the seeds of the Fascist temptation." Those deadly seeds flourish these days in Israel.

Five years ago, when Israeli Arabs blocked a few roads the police used live ammunition to kill Arab-Israelis, but now Israeli drivers come equipped with iron bars to open the roads blocked by the settlers.

Todays blocked roads were top news and much later down the line-up, came news of the lynching of 17 yr old Palestinian Ziad Majaida.   After a soldier pushed him to the wall, he was easy prey for settlers who threatened to kill the paramedic about to treat him. Soldiers said they were “surprised”.

We Jews know about “surprises” over the centuries, all over Europe, when everybody knew of an imminent pogrom, except for the local police, which was "surprised" and therefore "regretfully unable" to protect the abused Jews.

The settlers operate with clandestine cooperation among the settlers, the army, the state apparatus, and the political echelon, working in harmony against all law and order, bypassing democratic procedures, cheating the public and the media: "it's all right to lie for the Land of Israel," as Prime Minister Yitzhak Shamir once said.

It was Kierkegaard who once said you can learn a lot about a person from the one thing that makes him serious.  The fact that no atrocity ever made Israeli society, protest the way the settlers do now, is disgraceful evidence for the complete moral bankruptcy of the Jewish state.

China, Russia issue joint statement on new world order

THE  LEADERS  OF  MAJOR  ARMIES  VOICING  VACANT  IDEALISM…

DON’T  BOTHER  READING – REFERENCE ONLY

China and Russia here Friday issued a joint statement on a new world order in the 21st century.  The joint statement said the two countries are determined to strengthen their strategic coordination in international affairs and promote peace, stability and prosperity of the world.

UN REFORMS should strengthen its role in international affairs.   Reforms should be based on consensus and in the interests of the majority of the countries.    The UN’s role as the principal organization in global affairs, including economic and development problems, should increase.    UN security operations must abide by the UN charter with resolutions be strictly adhered to.

MULTILATERALISM - countries must have autonomy of internal affairs, with international issues solved through multilateral consultations with the renouncing the confrontation, coercion and strategic alliances.   Every nation on equal footing as befits its national realities.     This process will be a long and complicated, but mankind’s problems can only be solved by international law under an impartial and rational world order.   The primary goal is to safeguard peace, stability and security with development based on equality, and mutual respect.

NEW SECURITY FRAMEWORK  - a new security framework based on mutual trust, equality and cooperation.   This  based on the equal security rights of all nations by maintaining global strategic stability, and the multilateral process of establishing legal systems on arms control, disarmament and non-proliferation.   This includes the control of weapons through international cooperation under law.

Threats should be dealt with on the basis of the UN Charter and international law.   Open, non-exclusive regional political blocks beneficial to shaping a new world order in both economic cooperation and security cooperation mechanisms.    These regional organizations should set up ties with each other and produce an atmosphere of mutual trust and cooperation, the joint statement says.

ATTENTION TO GAP OF DISPARITY  -      All countries should enjoy the profits of globalization in such fields as economy, society, science, technology, information and culture, with mutually beneficial cooperation and common development.   Countries should eliminate discrimination in economic relations and narrow disparity between the rich and the poor through a comprehensive economic regime acceptable to all (based on the negotiations of equals).  Coercive measures should never be used to gain advantage.   Respect for the traditions of countries with diverse ethnic groups means that secession or ethnic hatred should never be incited, but instead this diversity would serve as a stabilizing resource.    External interference will never result from differing historic backgrounds, cultures, social and political systems, values and modes of development.

BLAH,  BLAH,  BLAH …

The square-mile-large City is a sovereign state located in the heart of greater London. As the "Vatican of the financial world," the City is not subject to British law.

According to the "American Almanac," the bankers are part of a network called the "Club of the Isles" which is an informal association of predominantly European-based royal households including the Queen. The Club of the Isles commands an estimated $10 trillion in assets. It lords over such corporate giants as Royal Dutch Shell, Imperial Chemical Industries, Lloyds of London, Unilever, Lonrho, Rio Tinto Zinc, and Anglo American DeBeers.            Wikipedia: City of London The City itself has two independent enclaves within it - Inner Temple and Middle Temple.    The City of London has a unique political status, a legacy of its uninterrupted integrity as a corporate city since the Anglo Saxon period and its singular relationship with the crown.        Proposals to annex the City into the City of Westminster, have never been taken seriously.    The City has a unique electoral system, which does not follow the usual rules of democracy, allowing businessmen a vote and arranging voters in wards with very unequal number of voters. This is sometimes a cause of controversy, reforms now mean previously disenfranchised firms will be entitled to nominate voters.

Embedded Systems Will Be Everywhere, Expert Predicts

Sakamura described a future in which information access is constant and ubiquitous. The later term describes Japan's future vision of embedded systems, which is dubbed "pervasive computing" in the United States and "ambient intelligence" in Europe.   40,000 RFID tags were used to provide information about "places" rather than things.   Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport intends to expand the project throughout Japan.

Fired Officer Is Suing Wal-Mart

In a lawsuit filed two weeks ago in state court in Arkansas, where Wal-Mart Stores is based and Mr. Lynn lives, he asserted that he was terminated in 2002 "for truthfully reporting the abysmal working conditions in Central American factories utilized by Wal-Mart and for refusing to comply with Wal-Mart's demand that he certify factories in order to get Wal-Mart's goods to market."  like locked exits and mandatory 24-hour shifts.

Scientists study ways the mind can heal itself

Plasticity means an injured brain can reroute signals through existing pathways and grow new connections between cells. It means the mind — in some cases, and given the right prompting — can begin to heal itself.     "The most amazing thing from our data is how many people are out there with brain injuries who actually have surviving and repairing brain tissue that is never discovered by traditional diagnosis," says Dr. Bernard Brucker, the University of Miami psychologist

“INFECTIOUS - DISEASES”

Why Are NZ Children Dying Of Influenza B?

Dr Sue Huang, virologist, admitted that the ESR was uncertain why influenza B was affecting children and young people so seriously in N.Z. but not in Australia.   I decided to look at the Ministry of Health’s website to see vaccination dates for the meningococcal B vaccine in the North Island.   Time and time again, I saw dates for the administration of meningococcal B vaccine precede an ‘epidemic’ of illness in the region concerned. This has been the case for numerous regions – Manukau, Auckland, Waikato, Wellington, Northland, and Palmerston North, to name a few.     The South Island meningococcal B vaccinations began earlier this month, and I now hear that Southland has been hit by influenza.

Researcher suggests mad cow disease is caused by a bacteria.

Lasmezas's study showed that 55% of mice injected with cattle BSE, and who came down with disease, had no detectable ‘infectious particles’.   Many animals that die of spongiform encephalopathies never show evidence of misfolded proteins, and Dr. Frank Bastian, of Tulane, an authority, thinks the disorder is caused by the bacterial DNA he found in this group of diseases."

ALSO:   HIV/AIDS Interview With Researcher Lawrence Broxmeyer MD.   In 1990 Montagnier did an experiment that put HIV advocates on the edge of their chairs. They found that cells cultured with "HIV", which normally died, grew well in the presence of two antibiotics, minocycline and doxycycline. Antibiotics do not affect viruses, so they were not working against HIV- it was a bacteria or a mycoplasma.

New Bird Flu Sequences Needed to Correct Mis-Matched Primers

Efforts to monitor avian influenza in Asia continue to be hampered by a lack of viral DNA sequence data from China, a World Health Organization (WHO) expert told The Scientist.   There are no 2005 H5N1 sequences publicly available at GenBank.    These sequences are necessary to update the tests, and so to eliminate the false negatives generated older tests.
